The Hotel Monaco was built in 1839 as the all marble General Post Office building in Washington DC. It was converted to a luxury hotel in 2001 and is said to be haunted by several spirits including a woman seen wearing American Civil War era clothing and clutching a letter. Legend says that she was expecting a love letter but instead received the news that her lover was dead. During the early days of the post office people would come to the building to get the mail and it was not uncommon to see woman pacing the area waiting for a letter.

A number of sightings have been reported over the years including construction workers in 2001 who say the spirit of the woman was seen in an area that was off limits to the public looking out a window. She vanished in front of their eyes moments later. During the Civil War the hotel's ballroom was used as a field hospital and guests and employees have reported seeing the spirits of doctors and hearing whispering and footsteps in the room as well.
